Wecome to Austin - Eliza Gilkyson

Most of you probably know that Step and I put together a compilation of Austin musicians to give as gifts to our wedding guests. I wanted to showcase some of the wonderful live music that can be found here as well as promote the local talent...has anybody out there bought music from one of the artist you heard on the cd?....Anyway, some of the artist we included were ones that we've actually seen in concert (Guy Forsyth, La Tribu, Trish Murphy, Schroedinger's Cat); the rest I took from the Austin Chronicle's Music Pole.

I've decided in addition to supporting these artists by buying the cds of the songs I included, Step and I should also make an effort to see them live. Last Friday, we got to see Eliza Gilkyson at the Cactus Cafe. We caught the late show (started at 10pm) after having dinner with Doug & Luca at Hyde Park. She's a great singer - I really like her voice. It's kinda like brown sugar - sweet, but gritty. She did a lot of ballads which would have been fine if it had been an earlier show...we were all kinda sleepy when we left. Despite dozing through a couple of songs, we all had a good time. There's at least one other Gilkyson cd I want to buy (it's got a great song on it called Twisted) and another song that I want to look for (a children's song about Christmas called Born in Bethlahem) that's not been recorded by Eliza (yet?).

She's back!!! The Austin Chronicle's Music Pole??..hmm. I have a vision of a huge pole the size they use for electricity with names of Austin musicians plastered all of it. It would be in the center of town and lit with Christmas tree lights; a beacon in the middle of 6th street for those desperate souls wandering Austin wondering where to get their groove on. I think they really should do that.

That's actually a pretty accurate vision, especially for those of us used to seeing all the poles around the UT campus plastered with concert announcements for local clubs.

Should have been poll, and then you wouldn't have gotten this s*** from us.
