Somewhere in the weekend paper

Somewhere in the weekend paper was an article about the Islamic holiday stamp, Eid Greetings, issued by the Post Office this year. Some idiot head of some stamp-collecting society apparently wrote congress with a request to recall the stamps, overprint them with an image of the Twin Towers, and reissue them as a "true reflection" of the Islamic faith. As a protest against such ignorance, I went to the Post Office yesterday and bought these stamps for my Christmas cards (I don't usually get around to sending out Christmas cards - but this year may be the exception....you never know...it could happen!). The funny thing is that as I was checking out at the post office, the postal agent pointed out to me a couple of times that the symbol on the stamp "wasn't a Christmas tree" and that it was "an Islamic stamp"....I wonder what she thought when I bought them anyway!

I just ordered some EID Stamps too! I thought they were really pretty.

Does anyone remember who the organization was that was trying to do the overprint on the eid stamp? I remember seeing one on ebay but not since then. Thanks

The article was in the Washington Post (Oct 18, 2003) and the organization was "Mekeel's and Stamps Magazine". You can find a reprint of the article here: http://www.icnacanada.org/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=49&mode=thread&order=0&thold=0
